How do I know if I need a unit?
The main two sources from which users get their water are public and private water supplies. All public water supplies must meet certain water standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency, while private wells are only subjected to local standards.
Most high depth wells have clean water, but there are cases when this water is contaminated and will need treatment.
To test your water, get a sample and send it to authorized testing laboratories or just get yourself a testing kit.
In case there is a problem with your water, just hire a contractor and get a purification system installed.
There are many ways you can clean your water. You can buy physical filters, activated carbon filters, reverse osmosis purification systems, UV systems, etc. You should choose one that best suits your needs.
With these filters you can remove particles like grit, sediment, dirt and rust from your water. They are usually made from ceramic or fiber. There are filters that can also remove bacteria and small particles like asbestos fibers, but you shouldn’t use one of these filters for water that is microbiological infected.
Activated carbon filters
These filters are great for removing chemical contaminants. They cannot remove inorganic chemicals like salt and metals but can reduce some, like chlorine.
Activated carbon filters can remove lead, but they get saturated with the impurities they remove. The same with normal carbon filters. Bacteria can gather and multiply in the filter, so you will need to change the filters once in a while.
Always make sure that the filters is changeable and also know the costs. You can buy activated carbon filters in multiple forms, like granular, powdered, powder coated paper, pressed carbon blocks.
These filters are not indicated to be used for water that is microbiological unsafe.
Reverse osmosis units
These units are made from multiple tanks and membranes. Water passes from one tank to another through a membrane that filters it. The system removes most of inorganic chemicals, like salt, metals, asbestos, minerals, nitrates etc. These units are not meant to work alone with microbiological unsafe water.
There are a few disadvantages of the system. The main is that is wastes a lot of water, like 75% of the water filtered. The membranes are very sensible and are subjected to decay. They need regular replacement.
This system uses evaporation and distillation to clean water. Most solids are filtered, like salts, metals, minerals, asbestos and fibers. They cannot remove all chemicals from the water, as many of them have lower boiling points then water. Most bacteria is killed, but it won’t kill it 100%. There are high energy costs with this system.
Ultraviolet light purification
This system will kill most viruses and bacteria from the water. It cannot remove chemicals and solids. You will need to clean the tank regularly as suspended solids may obstruct the light and make the unit inefficient.
Some things to consider
You need to pay great attention to maintenance, installation and running costs. Some units will need professional installation and maintenance can be quite expensive and difficult in the case of some units. Most filters come with a warranty so take advantage of it.
Be very careful with those pesky salesmen. They will do anything to sell you a unit, even though you do not need one. Before you buy a purification unit, make sure you really need one. Take a sample of water to a local laboratory and make sure that the water is contaminated before you go shopping.
