Basement floor and wall leaks are maybe the most common in your home. Floor leaks are a very serious matter and need to be dealt with as soon as possible. Basement leaks can lead to water damage and also to mold and mildew growth.
Some of the tools and materials that you will need are:
- Stiff brush
- Paint brush
- Mixing container
The first thing that you need to do is identify the location of the leak. You can do this by looking for pooled water, moisture, rust trails, etc. If the entire surface of the basement floor is moist, then you should first dry it up and then see where the leaks occur.
If you are planning on applying a concrete waterproofing sealer, then you should know that some of them cannot be applied on painted surfaces. See the instructions of the manufacturer first. If you cannot used them on certain surfaces, make sure you scrape the old paint, or clean the surface of the floor.
After preparing the surfaces, you need to identify the cracks in order to repair them. Clean the cracks for debris and dust using a wire brush. Then dry the place and add caulking or concrete to fill the cracks. Only then can you apply the waterproofing material.
Waterproofing the floor
Now it’s time to apply the waterproofing material. Always read the instructions provided by the manufacturer. If you have moist surfaces, then you should opt for a water soluble waterproofing material.
Use stiff brushes to apply the material. You need to cover all cracks and holes and spread it evenly. After applying the first layer of sealant, let it dry and apply another.
