Damp proofing concrete

If you have a damp basement, then you will have to handle a few things before considering to transform it in a liveable place. Damp basements can help mold and mildew to grow, thus transforming the basement in an unhealthy environment. So here are a few tips on how to damp proof your basement.

Membrane

Although it is called a liquid membrane, after it dries, it becomes very hard, creating a waterproof membrane. This solution is usually used before finishing the walls, or floors.The liquid membrane is actually a kind of paint that can be applied on the basement walls or floor.

Drainage membrane

This is a “smart membrane”. It has some small bubbles on its surface, much like the bubble wrap foil. These bubbles will absorb water until they are saturated. When they become saturated, the water drips from them to an installed drainage hole.

Epoxy sealers

If membranes are not the solution for you, then you can try the epoxy sealer. This option is used when you have problems with cracks and holes in your basement concrete and you do not want to apply a membrane on the entire surface of your basement. The epoxy sealer is mainly used to fill holes and cracks.

Using a dehumidifier

If you want to damp proof your basement, then you will need to use a dehumidifier, prior to applying any waterproofing membrane on the walls. The concrete needs to be dry  and the dehumidifier does this the best. It absorbs the moisture in the air and then collects it in a tank.
