Stoping a basement wall leak
Basement leaks can turn into big problems if left unhandled. The moisture will accumulate in your basement and create dampness which will lead to mold and mildew growth. These can cause respiratory problems.
Here’s how you can stop a basement wall leak.
Some of the tools and materials that you will need are:
- Small Brush
- Hydraulic cement
- Compressed air
- Protective gloves and goggles
- Mortar trowel
First of all you will need to locate the leak in the wall. This is the easiest step. Look for moisture and water traces.
Then you will need to inspect the crack. Take a hammer and a chisel and start opening the crack to make sure it’s not larger than it seems. So remove all the mortar near the crack.
Then use a wire brush and a normal brush to clean the debris from the crack.
After cleaning and opening the crack, you can start applying the cement. Always use protective gear, because cement is caustic and can cause serious health problems. Start mixing the cement with water until you get a paste. Start applying the cement to the crack. Cover it entirely and also the area near it. Work quickly as hydraulic cement hardens very fast.
To protect your basement from any future water problems, you can repair all the cracks in your basement and then apply a waterproofing material on the walls and floor.
It’s important to inspect your basement regularly. You can also take a look near your home and see if you have any pools or cracks in your home’s foundation. If you have pools, maybe you should consider installing a French drainage system.
